Training on case management in Community-based Long-term care for Older people

After the project received acceptance from the Provincial People’s Committees of Thanh Hoa and Hoa Binh, in July and August 2023, HelpAge International in Vietnam (HAI) coordinated with National ADB Consultants, Thanh Hoa Provincial Association of the Elderly (PAE) and the Hoa Binh PAE successfully organized training courses on “Case management in Community-based Long-term care for Older people”.

Attending the training courses were Case Managers, Case Managers Associates, representatives of the AEs from provincial to commune levels, representatives of the Department of Health, representatives of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (DOLISA), along with representatives from the District and Commune DOLISA, District Health Center, Commune Health Stations, and representatives of local authorities at village level. This is one of the first important activities and the foundation to help promote future activities of Project VIE090/TA9928 – “Developing Innovative Community-based Long-term Care Systems and Services” financed by The Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) through the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The training classes were organized: class 1 in Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa Province on July 25; Class 2 in Kim Boi district, Hoa Binh Province on August 3; Class 3 in Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa from August 10-13, 2023.

During the training, Consultants from HAI and ADB were provided with basic knowledge and skills on:

  • The long-term care concept, principle of gerontology; case management system
  • Building skills to communicate with frailty older people
  • Building knowledge and skills on case management, including Case finding; Screening, and risk stratification; Comprehensive need assessment; Care planning, and care foci; Implementing & coordinating
  • Introducing the case-filling system
  • Developing a reporting system
  • Developing a work plan and agree on the next steps
Activities in the training class

Long-term care is still a new area in Vietnam, especially in localities. The Consultants/Trainers combined presentations, organizing games, performing arts, group discussions, field visits, etc. to provide the best effect for the participants, especially for older people. The participants were delighted and enthusiastic. They shared positive feedback during and after the training courses indicating that they were satisfied and that they would like to attend more training courses like this.
